October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Launched as a collaboration between the government and private industry, Cybersecurity Awareness Month was created to raise awareness about digital security and to teach consumers how to protect themselves online. Scammers have become very sophisticated in deceiving people every day through emails and phone calls to obtain personal financial information. In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’d like to share the ways banks and consumers can help protect financial information.

Cybersecurity is a top priority at Waypoint Bank. In fact, banks have the most rigid regulatory requirements among U.S. industries. Banks use tactics like encryption, staff training and rigid privacy policies to protect clients’ money.

Banks are set up to immediately protect their customers. When a customer reports any fraudulent activity, the bank will immediately put steps in place to protect the account. With businesses, banks have a recovery plan in place in the event of a data breach.

As a customer, you should always be vigilant when it comes to banking. It is beneficial to use multifactor verification logins, even though it’s a bit of a pain, but please do this. Having a verification code sent to your cell phone is much better than sending it to your email. Cybercriminals may have an easier time accessing your email than your cell phone. Take the time to set up alerts to stay aware of your online activity. Alerts can let you know when a password has been changed, a withdrawal has been made, and other transactions. If you weren’t the one who made those transactions, the alerts will make it easier to react quicker. Always log out of your bank account when you are done, especially if you are using a public computer, or are at work. Finally, be suspicious of anyone who calls or texts asking for personal information like a social security number or bank account number. Banks do not make this a practice, so it would most likely be a scam artist trying to get your personal information.

In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, please take some time to review your security settings on your bank account, phone and other devices.
